What a view – By Nathan Cassidy

14 Feb

Nathan describes a passenger’s long wait.

What a view! The airport runway stretching out beyond the wide, panoramic glass windows, as far as the eye can see. My admiration was interrupted as a waitress stepped into view. I looked up whilst clinking my tea cup back down on the saucer. The waitress politely asked it everything was OK. I responded, with a smile, “Yes, thank you.”. She beamed back, “Good, enjoy your tea”. With that she turned on the spot before hurriedly turning towards another customer. Almost like an inspector.

Chatting, talking, babbling about holidays, the blissful, calm, rhythmic hubbub of the cafe. My flight? Not for a while, that can wait.

You don’t notice anything at first, not really. People sitting at tables, enjoying their coffee. The waitress still ‘checking’ on customers. Aeroplanes launching into the air, before gliding off into the distance. Small children with their parents, eyeing all the delicious cakes and food at the till. See, not much to notice. But when you start looking at the details, well, that’s when things get interesting. At a table at the back of the cafe, a youth.

Hooded and hunched over the table, he sits quietly. It was then I noticed, it was then I realised. The face. Just a split second, I managed o get a look at him. Gun in hand, sitting there. My brother. Just then, I realised, the gun was turning towards me. BANG!
